Landscape Sketching Above Rookhope

February 2020

Thinking about the textile panel that incorporates the village of Rookhope and the forms of the landscape above, led to a trip up to see Val Livingston who runs the Barrington Bunkhouse in Rookhope. Val took an active part in all of the community Map Panel workshops, and worked alongside artist Sue Abel on a hooky mat panel depicting flora, fauna and windmills!

A picturesque view over the Dales from high up in Rookhope. It is a sunny day, blue skies with small fluffy clouds float above the hills.

Once we reached Rookhope, we drove higher up to look at the wild landscapes and do some sketching of shapes and land formations, altered over time through the mine workings and wild weather.

It was a cold and windy day, with strong gusts and splatters of rain, and snow still in hilltop folds. The light and colour is amazing up there, and illuminates the bleak hills and land creases that lie exposed and open to the elements.

We huddled in the car most of the time, bundled up in coats and scarves, and sketched shapes, but the blasts of clean air when we ventured outside were intoxicating!
